During my five years at Abbs Cross :
1. I will have had the chance to express my views on issues concerning Abbs Cross and its community, and be listened to.
2. My academic, sporting or creative talents will have been celebrated — at school or outside.
3. I will have performed in front of, or had my work displayed to, an audience — either sports, dance, drama music or visual arts.
4. I will have engaged in learning outside the school environment and used my experience to aid my cultural development.
5. I will have had the opportunity to help others through voluntary activities.
6. I will have been to an artistic or sporting event at a major London venue.
7. I will have learnt to understand other cultures and faiths.
8. I will have helped develop an exciting twenty first century learning environment using creativity and innovation.
The Aim of Student Voice is to provide a method of encouraging students irrespective of their gender, background, ethnicity, or physical ability to become actively involved in decisions about their own learning and empowering them with appropriate ways to do so. We want to ensure that the learners themselves are involved in decisions about how, what and when they learn, with whom and the type of environment in which this occurs.
The structure of Student Voice is that there are three focus groups:
1. Pupil Progress and Development Voice – Red Voice.
Students will explore their role in effective learning and develop strategies to support progress and development, addressing their responsibility in dealing with transgression from an accepted code of conduct.
Membership: One representative from each form.
Guided by Miss Barnes.
2. Teaching and Learning Voice – Blue Voice
Students will engage with teachers in pursuit of personalising learning, through an analysis of effective teaching.
Membership: One representative from each form.
Guided by Mr Franceschi
3. Environmental Voice – Green Voice.
Students will recognise and contribute to developing a 21st Century Learning environment.
Membership: One representative from each form.
Guided by Miss Pilling.
Each focus group will elect three members to represent them on the Student Voice Executive. This group will also include Head Boy and Head Girl. I will guide the executive group. They will meet with the Leadership team and Mr Mayoh twice a year to ensure that the student’s voice is heard and to provide an opportunity for students to be involved in decision making processes relating to school policies.
The University of East London are very interested in this work and wish to become involved. They have offered to give the Student Voice pupils some training in some of the skills that this responsibility may require. Skills such as: How to run a productive meeting, confidence in voicing an opinion and listening to one another’s point of view. As well as some research skills to enable them to be involved in contributing towards the production of new policy documents.
A visit is planned to the Docklands Site on February 9th. All student voice pupils have been invited. There will be a guided tour of the site and then a talk about life in further education.
