OOSHL

Out of School Hours Learning (OOSHL) is an umbrella term given to learning, which takes place outside the classroom and school hours (previously known as Study Support or extra curricular activities). Attendance is voluntary, and students have the opportunity to work in mixed age groups and experience different learning styles. These mixed age group activities complement the schools vertical tutoring policy, further installing good relations across the age range.

DfEE (1999) define Out of School Hours Learning as a:

‘Learning activity outside normal lessons which young people take part in voluntarily. Study support is accordingly, an inclusive term, embracing many different activities with many different names and guises. Its purpose is to improve young people’s motivation, build their self-esteem and help them to become effective learners. Above all it aims to raise achievement.’

Last years OOSHL programme was extremely successful and provided exciting opportunities for our students, these included:

  • Stubbers activity days
  • kayaking qualifications
  • Scuba diving
  • The opportunity for students to qualify as first aiders

The above are just a small insight into the vast array of activities on offer.

The Out of School Hours Learning timetable will be published in early October, providing an extensive timetable of all the extra opportunities we provide our students.
