This department is led by the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) Mrs. Holland with a team of learning support assistants dedicated to supporting pupils across the curriculum.
Pupils receive support according to their needs which is tailored to the challenges they experience. The timetable is organised so that pupils can be offered a place in a small English group and/or specific numeracy teaching where necessary.
Learning support assistants also support in mainstream classes in all areas of the curriculum allowing pupils to enjoy the diversity of subjects both academic and the more practical.
Pupils are encouraged and supported to take part in all extra curricular activities and visits which allow them to develop their independence and social skills.
The Study Centre is open before school to help students organise themselves for the day and a social lunch club operates for students who need to develop social skills. They can eat lunch in a quieter environment which encourages talking, reading and co-operation. This operates with help from senior students involved in Student Voice.
Pupils are encouraged during their five years at Abbs Cross to become more independent in preparation for college or the world of work.
