Additional learning that students undertake outside of lessons plays a significant part in their education at Abbs Cross. Rather than issuing homework timetables, subjects set additional learning tasks as and when they are appropriate to the curriculum, therefore enabling teachers to focus the learning when it is most relevant.
Depending on the requirements of the various subjects, students may be set tasks such as, for example, research, practising something for the next lesson, problem solving exercises, longer or shorter writing tasks or continuing classwork. This list is not intended to be exhaustive and there will be occasions when other types of task are set. Individual subject requirements are made clear in the curriculum letters that are sent home during the autumn term. In practice, some subjects set regular and frequent short homeworks, while others set less frequent but more substantial tasks.
Many students make use of the school’s resources during breaks, lunchtimes and after school. The Learning Resource Centre is open until 6.00pm every day and there are a range of opportunities for students to use other departmental facilities during the school day. Consequently, it is not obligatory for students to do the work at home; rather, they need to decide on the best place in which to do each task, depending on the resources that they need.
