Abbs Cross School and Arts College

Abbs Cross School, Commitment to Opportunity and Excellence

Healthy Schools

The national healthy schools initiative was launched in 1999 and by 2003 Abbs Cross was awarded this accolade. We were the first secondary school in Havering to gain this. The initiative has involved improving many aspects including healthy eating and the physical environment of the school.

To date many improvements in terms of the school environment have been seen. Student voice has a large responsibility and input. Each college has a designated area to look after in the school which changes each year. A student voice member in each form is responsible for reporting back to Mr. Hinnigan (the school’s Healthy Schools Co-ordinator) any ideas or suggestions that the students have on how to improve the school environment.

Abbs Cross has a highly successful recycling programme, which the students are actively involved in, and have previously won the ‘Havering's Recycle Now’ competition.

From September 2008 catering provision will be provided ‘in house’. Pupils will be encouraged to have an input to menus, whilst appreciating the Government guidelines which schools must adhere to.

There are many other on-going projects and initiatives in the pipe-line also.
