Abbs Cross School, Commitment to Opportunity and Excellence

The Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme

Abbs Cross School and Arts College has been involved in the Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme since 2001, with the first award going to Fiona McLurg in May of that year for her contribution to the school’s chess club. Since then, pupils from Years 7 to 11 have been honoured with the monthly awards in recognition of their commitment to school life.

The Jack Petchey Foundation is well known across East London and West Essex for its charitable work in supporting young people; over £1.5 million is allocated to the Award Scheme every year. Recently the organisation has spread across other parts of the UK, as well as establishing international links with young people in Spain.

Ten pupils received the monthly award during the year 2008-09 (there is no award in July) and each of them had the chance to decide which area of school life should benefit from the £200 that was at their disposal. All winners will receive a commemorative medallion at a ceremony to be held in the New Year at the Queens Theatre.
