Abbs Cross School, Commitment to Opportunity and Excellence

Applied Learning

In March 2008 Abbs Cross School & Arts College was graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and, having met the High Performing Specialist School (HPSS) criteria, was invited to take on an additional specialism. In April 2009, the school was awarded the Applied Learning Specialism. This was chosen to build upon our existing specialism in Performing Arts and to complement our already vocationally rich Key Stage 4 programme.

The concept of Applied Learning is often equated to ‘hands on’ or practical learning experiences. A broader definition advocates an approach which contextualises learning in a way which empowers and motivates learners, while assisting them to develop key skills and knowledge required for employment, further education and active participation in their communities.

The theory of Applied Learning focuses on the following:

  • Linking understanding and learning activities to job roles;
  • Interaction with professionals;
  • Real life investigations and active enquiry;
  • Learning through doing;
  • Interaction with other learners through group work;
  • Learning in different environments.

As a School we have a focus on the ambition of 'employability for life', improving learners’ aspirations and employability skills and thereby enhancing their life chances.
